Sat-Navs now only £50!

http://www.southmid.com/?page=NewsSingle&itemID=6

Could a satellite navigation system really cost only £50? Unfortunately it’s true, because that’s the price thieves are selling them for on the black market. According to research carried out by Autoglass®, the black market in the UK has topped over £13 million.
The report also identifies that one third of Sat-Nav owners leave the cradle on display; while one in ten leave the system on display while they park, clearly creating an open invitation to thieves.

Simon Galkoff, Partner for Southmid Products said, “Thieves understand the value of the Sat-Nav systems and know that they are extremely saleable on the black market. Leaving a cradle or the whole system on display is inviting thieves to steal your property. The more careful motorists who remove their suction mount cradles are also being targeted, as thieves know to look for the sucker ring-mark left on the windscreen by the cradle. The Nav-Mat is a simple and practical solution to combat this growing theft problem. By attaching the windscreen mount to the Nav-Mat rather than the windscreen and then simply removing the Nav-Mat and the Sat-Nav at the end of the journey, there are no tell tale signs remaining for thieves to spot.”

Galkoff spotted the Nav-Mat when he was travelling in the USA last summer and immediately knew that it was the ideal product for the UK market. He and business partner Clive Rose swiftly secured the European distribution rights from the manufacturing company, Bracketron.

So convinced of the Nav-Mat’s benefits, Galkoff approached The Association of Chief Police Officers through their ‘Secured by Design’ initiative. They saw the Nav-Mat as a very useful product to reduce the theft of Sat-Nav devices and the product is now fully licensed and all packaging carries the ‘Official Police Security Initiative’ mark.

Calvin Beckford, Secured by Design Development Officer for South England commented, “We particularly liked the Nav-Mat as it is a simple solution for a major crime problem affecting the UK. We saw its particular benefits being;

It keeps the windscreen clear of obstructions.

There are no suction marks left on the windscreen.

The windscreen suction mount is less likely to be left on view in the vehicle.

We are delighted to have licensed the Nav-Mat and to be able to create awareness with the Police national Crime Prevention teams and to the general public through our website www.securedbydesign.com.”

“Investing in a Nav-Mat is a small price to pay compared to the typical cost of a car break in” added Galkoff. “The Nav-Mat has a recommended retail price of £19.99. The typical break in costs a motorist £646 and based on Autoglass® research, 63% of motorists didn’t claim on their insurance.”

The Nav-Mat will make its debut in the UK when it hits the shelves of Halfords 100 largest stores from 26 April. The Nav-Mat is also available direct from Southmid Products website www.southmid.com

Black market for stolen Sat-Navs tops £13 million!

http://www.southmid.com/?page=NewsSingle&itemID=3

With almost 3 million satellite navigation devices in the UK, an increase of 68% on the previous year, satellite navigation devices are becoming an increasing popular target for thieves.

Entrepreneurs Simon Galkoff and Clive Rose founders of Southmid Products knew they had a success on their hands when they spotted the Bracketron Nav-Mat in the USA. Galkoff who is a Magistrate in Hertfordshire commented, "Being aware of the amount of vehicle crime related to satellite navigation devices, when we came across this easily portable dashboard mat, we knew that it was the ideal solution in getting suction mounts off the car windscreen. With thieves looking for the suction mount 'ring' on the windscreen, many vehicles are being broken into in the anticipation that the Sat-Nav device will be under the seat or in the glove box. The Nav-Mat is a simple and practical solution. By attaching the windscreen mount to the Nav-Mat rather than the windscreen, there are no tell tale signs remaining for thieves to spot."

Research from Autoglass, the windscreen repair and replacement company says that Sat-Navs stolen from vehicles, over 260,000 in 2005, are being sold for as little as £50, providing substantial salaries for smash and grab thieves. It would take just 280 stolen Sat- Navs to generate an income of £14,000 per year.

Galkoff approached Secured by Design on the recommendation of the Hertfordshire Police and SBD saw the Nav-Mat as a very useful product to reduce the theft of Sat-Nav devices. Calvin Beckford, SBD Development Officer for South England commented, "We particularly liked the Nav-Mat as it is a simple solution for a major crime problem affecting the UK. We saw its particular benefits being; it keeps the windscreen clear of obstructions, there are no suction marks left on the windscreen, the windscreen suction mount is less likely to be left on view in the vehicle."
